7 Benefits of learning music as a child: in brief

Music Matters Celebration 1. The development of language.Music is one of the few activities that involves using the whole brain. Music plays a very important part in learning both our native language, as well as additional ones. Science has shown that learning music requires the same parts of the brain involved in learning languages. Music lessons can support and suppliment schools lessons.2. Improving memory and attention span.Music students often learn pieces by memory. Even learning a snippet of a piece develops a child's working memory. The need to fully focus at lesson increases attention span. Listening carefully to and carrying out instructions prepares children for school and further studies.3. Improving skills needed to do maths. Music and mathematics have a lot in common. Students of both need to remember pattern sequences. Music students need to learn about counting, rhythm, time signatures, pitch, scales and a lot more. Learning music is an excellent support to the maths they learn at school.4. Coordination and fine motor skills are practised.Naturally learning music helps with listening skills. Learning how to play an instrument involves improving hand-to-eye coordination, ear-to-hand coordination, and the fine motor skills needed across ten fingers on both hands, often all played at once.5. Learning about the value of discipline and routine. The daily schedule of music practice  may be a challenge to stick to but children can see from an early age the benefits of a routine.6. Self esteem and confidence is built.Music students often perform at concerts in front of family and friends. This builds confidence. Self esteem is improved when success is rewarded by others recognising the work and effort put into the practise.7. Family bondingWhat better way to involve the whole family than in supporting and listening to your young child practise, or even put on a mini-performance at home. If more than one member of the family plays an instrument, there is a perfect opportunity to have a home grown band. If not, hand out the shakers and tapping sticks and sing along.
