How young can my child start formal music lessons?
You child is unique and matures at his own pace. There is no set age to start music lessons but there are clear preparation guidelines which make an early start much more fun and successful for everyone.Children who know their right side from left side have a head start. Most instruments need to be played with both hands. Knowing which hand to use when is paramount to successful lessons and practice. By two years of age, children should be aware that they have two distinct sides to their body and by three should be able to name them and attach the name to the correct side.Music making comes down to a series of complex fine motor movements, unlike dance where gross movements are much more important. In fact gross motor movements are not encouraged when sitting at the piano/guitar etc. so if your child can sit for at least 15 minutes to focus, this will be to his advantage. In addition to physical readiness, acceptance of the need to practise is paramount. Music practise should be a natural extension of play at home. Gone are the days when children are commanded to "go and practise your piano".So when you are ready and when your child is mature enough, get those formal music lessons underway!
